A Book Review of House Calls & Hitching Posts

I can learn something from every person I meet.

They say it is not one's circumstances that cause stress, so much as one's reaction to those circumstances.

You know, we all have our own down days and I suppose the thought of suicide flashes through most minds at some point, but a person can't dwell on those thoughts, because thoughts lead to actions.

After all, there's more to life than money.  Winston Churchill once said, 'We make a living by what we earn, but we make a life by what we give.'

. . . the secret to happiness comes from ministering to the needs of others.

- Dr. Elton Lehman

House Calls and Hitching Posts: Stories from Dr. Elton Lehman's Career Among the Amish by Dorcas Sharp Hoover is an inspiring story of a life well-lived in service to the Lord.  Dr. Lehman worked as a doctor for the Amish of Wayne County, Ohio, for several decades.  As implied by the title, this book is a collection of wide and varied adventures the doctor had in caring for this community.  Some of the tales are sad, many humorous, but all of them are an indication of the joy which one man had in choosing obedience to the command to treat others as he would want to be treated.  The book shares an intimate look into the lifestyle and convictions of the Amish and how Dr. Lehman lived out his own convictions through the wisdom of the Word.
