Weekend Re-Cap

Stained glass from one of the churches we visited -
On Saturday, Mom, Eli and I spent the day Christmas bazaaring at several local churches.  Our favorite was the one that we visited at lunchtime.  We enjoyed homemade chicken corn soup and barbecue sandwiches in their fellowship hall and then popped into the room where they were selling yard sale items.  At the point we walked in the door, they announced that we could fill a grocery bag for $1.  That was all we needed to hear!  At the encouragement of the volunteers, we stuffed two bags full of goodies - most of which were craft supplies.  Someone had donated a large variety of craft items - from several sizes of wooden beads and little figurines for vignettes to sphagnum moss and floral tape to tiny birds and floral picks of holly and pinecones.  We had so much fun and got at least $50 of craft supplies for $2!  I can't wait to find a chunk of time this week to sort through all my goodies -

On Sunday afternoon, M. and I set off for our Annual Apple Drive.  We packed fresh orchard apples and two thermoes of hot tea, then headed off for a drive to Apple Country to see the orchards.   The orchards themselves were just beautiful - the leaves of the changing trees were a large mixture of hues - from greens to browns to yellows, oranges and reds.  And some of the trees were just dripping with cherry-colored apples, others with some the color of rust.  One of my favorite sights came even before we got to the orchards - the apple-shaped lights along the streets of Biglerville are just darling, each complete with a leaf.  We also drove past the amazing Thomas Bros. Country Store, as well as the beautiful white Historic Round Barn.  The last stop on our drive before heading home was to our favorite soft ice cream stand in Hanover for raspberry-vanilla twist.  A sweet day all around -

Ahhh. A truly beautiful Penn. autumn day doing all my favorite things!
Hey, Julie, I found an old book at a sale and thought it seems like one you would really enjoy, too. It is *The Family Book of Home Entertaining* by Florence Brobeck. It is a wonderful big (440p) 1960 walk down memory lane when folks had lots of company and threw fun parties. There are several on Amazon for mere pennies -- you will like it, I think.
Enjoy your cool crisp days as we are still humid/80's/air conditioning. Blech........

We stopped at that historic round barn on our way to western Maryland for vacation last May! The upstairs of the barn was so awesome!

Lori, I have that book and ADORE it!! In fact, I think it's my favorite vintage homemaking book of all that I've come across. Great stuff! 80 degrees in November - I agree with you, blech! Wishing you some cooler days . . .

Ha! I just KNEW as I began reading it that my "kindred spirit" would love it, too. Neat. I had skipped around to get to know it but was so amazed at the incredible volume of thought/suggestions in every paragraph!! that I began at the beginning to read each word.
Would love a summary of each of your herb club occasions...
Be blessed today!

Lori, That's exactly how I read the book! Started out reading this and that and ended up reading every line. Delicious! As for the herb club posts, I have one for November that I haven't put together yet. You'll find posts about September and October meetings in the archives.
