A Book Review of A Path Through Suffering

The back cover of A Path Through Suffering – Discovering the Relationship Between God’s Mercy and Our Pain by Elisabeth Elliot sums it up well:  A Path Through Suffering is a book for anyone searching for faith, comfort and assurance.  It is an honest book about the way our merciful God draws us close to himself and expands our capacity for surrender and obedience in order that we might finally and fully share in his resurrection glory.”

I was plesantly surprised to find that this book was written by not one, but two, of my favorite missionaries/writers.  Each chapter begins with a quote by Lilias Trotter, missionary to North Africa in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s.  She was a woman who had a passion for God’s creation and was continually discovering spiritual lessons through His handiwork.  Mrs. Elliot takes these quotes from Miss Trotter and expands on their themes – creating full chapters, each addressing difference aspects of suffering.  A Path Through Suffering is a lovely collaboration between two women who knew much about the subject through personal experience.  The book is encouraging, comforting and helpful.
