Then Moses said to God, "Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you.' Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them?" God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. 'This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.' - Exodus 3:13-15 NAS
God's covenant-relation to his people is what he will be ever mindful of, what he glories in, and what he will have us never forget, but give him the glory of: if he will have this to be his memorial unto all generations, we have all the reason in the world to make it so with us, for it's a precious memorial.
-- Matthew Henry
These verses bring to mind the seriousness of taking the LORD's name in vain as stated in Exodus 20:7, part of the list of the Ten Commandments. I've heard it said that ancient Jews thought His name too holy to even utter. In essence, the LORD is His name. Every time we use His name disrespectfully and/or with a lack of reverence, we are applying those same words to God Himself.
Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, 'Whom seek you?' They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am, they went backward, and fell to the ground. - John 18:4-6
As I thought on the name of God the Father, I was also reminded of the preciousness of the name of God the Son. Many accounts of the disciples' healing and casting out of demons in the name of Jesus are recorded in the New Testament. Jesus' name is the One in which we pray, the name that we cry out to be saved, and One Day, the name at which every knee shall bow. There is great power in His name that we would do well to remember.
Your Name is a strong and mighty tower
Your Name is a shelter like no other
Your Name, let the nations sing it louder
'Cause nothing has the power to save, but Your Name.
- Lyrics of chorus from Your Name by Phillips, Craig & Dean
