Hatching a Moth

M. found a cocoon this winter in the blueberry patch. What a masterpiece it was. A tightly wrapped package of dried leaves, artfully overlapping one another. E. put it in a glass jar on a sunny windowsill and waited. Six weeks later, a giant moth emerged! We watched it shiver and dry its wings one morning, left it fly around the room for awhile and then sent it on its way into the great, big world. A beautiful wonder.
