A Homemade Calendar
I was shopping the other day and noticed a sign which stated: "90 More Days Until Christmas." I did a little mental double-take! How can it be 3 months until Christmas again?! Anyway, it made me think that there's not a whole lot of this year left. And to that end, I decided to add a photo to the blog today of my homemade calendar. In the past, at the end of each year, I would go on the hunt for a new weekly calendar. However, two issues always came up - the price and the lay-out. I was never happy with either one! And so, I decided to make up my own - cheap and adapted to my schedule.
I simply buy an inexpensive, 8 1/2 x 11" wire-bound sketchbook (usually from a discount store as the ones in art stores are pricey). Each Saturday, I make up my new calendar page for the week. At the top left, I paste a small magazine photo I like and label the week. On the left-hand side under the picture is a space to list things that need done in the week but haven't been assigned a specific day yet. Using a thin marker on the right side, I divide the rest of the sheet in eight blocks - one for each day of the week plus an extra one on the bottom right in which I write blog ideas. I label each box with the appropriate date and immediately plug in the daily chores assigned to that day. For example, I always clean the bathroom on Mondays, dust and vacuum bedrooms on Tuesday, etc. Then I write in anything else that needs done on certain days of the week - doctor appointments, reminders to send out birthday cards, etc. As the week progresses, I plug things from the left-hand box of odds and ends into specific days of the week as there is time. I've used this type of calendar for well over a year now and find it suits my pocketbook and taste! Perhaps it will be of help to you -

I love this idea. Right now I am just making lists which I check off through the day. Crossing things off really helps me feel like I am accomplishing tasks. Writing my lists in a notebook would allow me to look back as to when I did something, or cooked something last. Thanks a lot for posting. I am always looking for new ideas to make me a better wife and mother!

When we make our own planners and calendars, we can really customize them for ourselves, can't we? I used to buy school planners and then felt bogged down trying to use them the way the author instructed. I felt enslaved to trying to do it the "right way". I finally decided, just like you, to make up my own, and to do what works for me. What freedom!!
By the way, thanks for visiting my new blog. You are my first and only visitor so far, and since my blog isn't listed on my profile, I may not have many readers. However, when I blogged before, I was so zealous for a huge blog audience that I became obsessed with it. I've learned that I need to write for God's glory and for my own enjoyment...even if no one else reads it. The Lord will bring me the readers he wants me to have...in His time.

Ruth,
So glad the calendar idea was a help to you!! Another benefit to this idea is that I plan on keeping the book and will enjoy browsing through it in the future as a type of journal. I have an old calendar from almost 20 years ago - right around the time my husband and I were getting married. I LOVE paging through it and being reminded of the tuxedo fitting, other appointments we had, etc.
Blessings,
Julie
Patti,
I was happy to view your blog! I understand exactly what you mean about readers - my desire is that others would read and be encouraged by my blog. However, I'm trusting Him to send exactly whom He wants it to minister to - I don't want it to be something which boasts my pride because of numbers. Thanks for sharing!
Blessings,
Julie
Excellent idea!!
I have taken to putting my to do list and weekly timetable of routine jobs on the computer.
I love this idea too. I've been making a daily to-do list, but I like the idea of having a whole week laid out.
And I love the idea of gluing a magazine photo in one corner to make it personal and attractive.
Thank you!
